FLT White Paper: Transforming Complex Technical Content Into an Accessible Editorial Experience
ROLE: Design Lead
CLIENT: FIirst Light technologies
INDUSTRY: Clean Technology / Solar Infrastructure
YEAR: 2026
MEDIUM: Editorial Print Design
SCOPE: Editorial Design, Information Design, Infographics, Print Production, Visual Communication, Layout Design
First Light Technologies designs and manufactures high-performance, solar-powered LED lighting for public spaces, including pathways, parks, and parking lots. Their products are designed to be grid-independent, durable, and self-contained.
FLT needed a professionally designed white paper to support an upcoming international trade show. The project involved transforming dense technical information into a polished, visually engaging print piece that could communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively.
Challenge
The project came with several constraints:
Extremely tight turnaround timelines
Large amounts of technical content
Limited page count
Existing imagery that was not suitable for print production
The challenge was balancing readability, visual quality, and information density while ensuring the final piece was fully prepared for print under tight deadlines.
Approach
To address the lack of usable print-quality imagery, I used AI-assisted image upscaling tools to improve the quality of existing assets while also creating a series of custom vector infographics and supporting visual elements tailored specifically to the content.
The layout system focused on:
Strong editorial hierarchy
Structured information flow
Clear data visualization
Readability across dense content sections
Maintaining visual consistency throughout the document
The final design needed to feel polished and professional while helping readers quickly absorb complex technical information in a clear and approachable way.
Outcome
The final white paper was successfully delivered in time for international trade show distribution and provided First Light Technologies with a significantly more polished and accessible presentation of their technical content.
The project highlighted the importance of information hierarchy, editorial structure, and adaptability when designing under production constraints and tight timelines.
